HOW I GOT
HERE

I got into television in a storage room at my high school. There were nearly 150 S-VHS tapes back there, and none had been archived. I digitized them and made a documentary about the broadcast program and what it meant to the students who came through it. I saw a story that mattered and a gap I could fill.

At Montclair State, I wanted our News Lab class to try a show with the studio cameras and control room alongside the vMix productions we were already doing. I pitched it to my professor. He said yes, as long as I produced it too. I took that on, wrote the script and packages, and technical directed the special.

More recently, I built News Kit to help students plan and run a show. It was fun to figure out, and it's even better to see other students learning with it.

I'm now one of five senior producers and the operations lead at Montclair News Lab. I want to keep learning in a professional live news environment and contribute while I'm there.

News Kit — Broadcast Automation

  • News Kit is the newsroom tool I built for Montclair News Lab. Students can pitch stories, build rundowns, revise scripts, check media, and track show timing in Google Sheets, Docs and Drive.
  • It exports a vMix-ready show package. Native Data Sources, shortcuts and VB.NET scripts take cues from the rundown and control inputs, transitions, playback and graphics. The operator gets a 12-cue Multiview display, without a separate server or control app.
  • Before rehearsal or air, it flags missing sources or media, unapproved or unready stories, and inputs that don't match the open vMix preset. I've run it for multiple live broadcasts as Automation Director and trained other students on it.

  • My professor said I could do the control room show if I produced it too. I took that on, recruited a 12-person crew, and planned the camera and control room setup.
