Ever since B.R.I.C.S, The South African market has been flooded by Chinese food, fashion, technology and what we call “China Malls”. I’ve never experienced their culture or been to China myself so I thought I’d try out bite sized china via the snacks from my local China Mall/City.
1. Tomato Potato Chips (蕃茄薯片)
Our chips/crisps start at R1 and usually fizzles out at R10. The China Mall Tomato flavored Potato chips cost me R19,99. The chips weren’t that bad, the flavor was a bit dull, but nothing too bad as it is similar to our usual tomato chips. Definitely not worth the price 😉 BUT one must understand that the store owner is thinking like a business woman. I rate this product 2/5.
2. Ice Tea (冰茶)
With the many FALSE stereotypes floating around about the drinks imported from China, I was scared to try out their beverages. One thing we have in common as a country is that we LOVE Ice tea. I opted for the prettiest looking tea, although didn’t know what Flavor it was because of the language. After I had a sip I was presently surprised. Definitely something I’d try again. Drawings on the bottle depict watermelon, grapefruit & lemon= So I put two and two together about the flavor. I rate this product 4/5.
3. White Rabbit Sweets (白兔糖)
This product is (In my Opinion) A South African legend. I’m sure every person can say that they have had these when they were kids. It’s a vanilla flavored milk sweat which I can eat the whole bag of in one night. Again, With import costs the R40 (big bag) price tag is hefty, But fork it out …oink oink. I rate this product 5/5.
4. Mystery Square (神秘广场)
I took this off the shelf because I have a hectic sweet tooth. It cost me R1,50 so it wasn’t too much of an effort. I must say in advance I didn’t try this one haha, My mother tried this one for me and she says it was like a fruit roller (which I don’t eat). My mom rates this product 1/5. AND YES I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT IT WASN’T CHOCOLATE.
Thanks so much for reading this and seeing how much I care for other’s cultures! Should I try your culture’s or country’s food next? 🙂 message below.
